Heather Duncan is well-known for her paintings of abstracted and emotive landscapes that she continues to paint and exhibit nationally, but since 2015 she has been developing her ceramic creations from a studio in her home village of Kirk Ireton.
She makes hand thrown functional pots that would delight any kitchen or dining room. Her aim is to produce functional pots decorated in the colours of the landscapes and coastal environments that she loves. Each pot is individual, she has no interest in making pots that are identical; rather, she aims to produce pieces that resonate independently, but which work together.
“In our home we have an eclectic mix of plates, bowls, cups and jugs, nothing paired or in sets, each piece collected or created alone. Memories are associated with each item…. This is what I wish to create in the pottery studio… individual, and maybe, quirky ceramics that appeal to the individual, but which all sit together beautifully.
Alongside her tableware, she has just started to create new ceramic objects that draw together her painting and her love of clay… producing her landscape boxes.
